Bed Bug Cocktail Cure for Snakebite

In 77 A.D., the Roman philosopher Pliny wrote that Egyptians used bed bugs as an ingredient in a potion to heal snakebites. Evidently, no one lived to verify the success of this treatment. Despite 3,500 years of having our blood sucked by bed bugs, humans have yet to find any use for these irritating insects. Two things that our long association with bed bugs has taught us are that these bugs are very well adapted to living with humans and are very tough to get rid of.

With bed bug infestations on the rise from Silicon Valley to San Diego, from West Coast to East Coast, prevention is your best weapon against bed bugs. Beg bugs don’t fly and don’t crawl very far. You won’t find them in the garden or encounter them on a hike, but you may meet them in a hotel room, on “vintage” clothing, or in that armchair you found on Craigslist. Cracks, crevices, and upholstery are a bed bug’s best friend. They just love to hitchhike in luggage, moving boxes, and furniture. Before you introduce anything new (or well-traveled) into your living space, perform an inspection. Use a flashlight and magnifying glass if necessary. Look for bed bug droppings (dark specks of dried blood) and buggy body parts (exoskeletons).  Wash clothing and bedding, and dry on the highest setting safe for the fabric. Want more tips?
